The Careers of Doctorate Holders – Looking at Academic and Non-academic Careers

This presentation will provide insights from monitoring the careers of doctorate holders in Flanders (Belgium). Firstly, we will dive into the academic careers ranging from doctoral researchers, to postdoctoral researchers and to professors. Data will be presented from 1990 up until 2017 and will make a distinction between gender, science cluster and nationality.

Next, we will zoom in on doctorate holders' non-academic careers. More specifically, we will look at these careers from the perspective of the doctorate holder as well as the perspective of the non-academic employer.

Anneleen Mortier, Lien Wille and Eva Steenberghs are part of the ECOOM research centre at the University of Gent, Belgium. ECOOM focuses on issues related to Human Resources in Research. The centre researches academic trajectories, including doctoral and postdoctoral careers, and aims to further understanding of cross-sectoral mobility of researchers leaving academia to pursue non-academic careers. For this purpose, both quantitative (administrative databases, public data, and surveys) as well as qualitative data (in-depth interviews) are used.
