On 28 November 2025, Nina Bieling, Sude Pekşen, and Prof. Liudvika Leišytė presented their paper based on insights from the DiveHack Freiraum 2025 project at the IIE’s 2nd International Conference on Teaching and Learning at IIE Varsity College, South Africa.

Their presentation “Fostering students’ diversity competence through problem-based learning and hackathons” focused on the question of how diversity competence can be systematically promoted in higher education teaching.

As part of the DiveHack project, funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre, the researchers developed a teaching format that combined problem-based learning with a 24-hour hackathon. Students worked on real-life diversity challenges in cooperation with partners from business and administration, enabling them to translate theoretical knowledge directly into practical solutions.

The 2nd International Conference on Teaching and Learning of the Independent Institute of Education took place at Cape Town, South Africa.
